Because some people seem to have forgotten.
This also does not include a) older media where an openly lgbt character would spell cancellation for the series or b) foreign media that cannot show open lgbt relationships due to censorship
^^^^^^
This also does not include: REAL LIFE FUCKIN PEOPLE
With older or foreign media that had to dodge censorship, the term is queer coding.
It’s different from queerbaiting in that the character is meant to be interpreted by audiences as queer, and portrayed as such in subtext, but enough plausible deniability is maintained that it escapes censorship; the character is not explicitly shown or stated to be queer. Queerbait characters are portrayed as cishet, but there may be jokes or interview commentary suggesting that they “could be” queer, while the people in charge of the narrative have no intention of actually delivering on those suggestions.
And the term for when it’s real life people is mind your own goddamn business.

Shout out to anyone that ever made a character that’s a ‘Secret Government experiment’ that escapes the lab and is now wanted and misunderstood. That’s top tier character design, thank you.
